To win a poker tournament you have to hold every chip in play, simple.

There are two ways to win a hand;

1. Everyone else in the hand folds to your bet

2. You have the best hand at the end of the hand (see the hand rankings below)

1. ROYAL FLUSH

Poker’s most famous hand, a royal flush, cannot be beaten. It consists of the ace, king, queen, jack and ten of a single suit

The Beginning

When playing Texas HoldEm poker, every player is dealt two cards face down – these are called your 'hole cards'. Then there is a round of betting where you can Check, Bet or Fold. This stage of the game is known as pre-flop and what you should do is dependent on those hole cards, or starting hand.

When all the betting has finished three shared cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table. This is called the flop.

The flop:

The middle

After this there is another round of betting, then a fourth shared card – called the turn â€“ is dealt.

The turn:

There is another round of betting then a final shared card – called the river â€“ and a final round of betting.

The river:

Your best Texas Holdem hands will be made by using your hole cards and the five cards in the middle to make the best possible five card poker hand. Not sure what the best Texas Holdem poker hands are? Check out the poker hand rankings here.

So, for example, if you have 9-9 and the shared cards are 9-9-A-5-2 you have four-of-a-kind. If the shared cards were J-Q-K-7-2 you would only have two nines.

Sometimes the best texas hold em hand is made by the five shared cards on their own. If they were 10-10-10-10-A and you had 9-9 your hole cards would not play as there is a four-of-a-kind of higher value already showing.

Players in a poker game act in turn, in clockwise rotation (acting out of turn can negatively affect other players). When it is a player's turn to act, the first verbal declaration or action he takes binds him to his choice of action; this rule prevents a player from changing his action after seeing how other players react to his initial, verbal action.

Until the first bet is made each player in turn may "check," which is to not place a bet, or "open," which is to make the first bet. After the first bet each player may "fold," which is to drop out of the hand losing any bets they have already made; "call," which is to match the highest bet so far made; or "raise," which is to increase the previous high bet.

A round of betting is only completed when all reamaining players have put in the same amount (or all but one players is all in), then the next community card is dealt or showdown if it is the end of the hand

The Basics

A poker hand is made up of the best 5 cards out of your 2 cards and the 5 communal cards. If you and another player have the same 4 card hand the player with the highest 5th card will win the pot. If more than one player has an identical highest hand the pot will be split evenly. All suits are equal.

10. HIGH CARD

Any hand that does not qualify under the categories listed. In the event of a tie, the highest card wins, such as ‘ace-high’.
